The cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette, Indiana has had a 20 year old policy stating that any exotic pet is not allowed in city parks. This policy was established before ferrets became more of a common household pet and a proper rabies vaccine was not available to ferrets. However, in recent years that has changed. Rabies vaccine is available and mandatory and the state of Indiana labels ferrets as domesticated animals just like dogs and cats. This petition is to help eliminate the policy of banning ferrets from Lafayette/West Lafayette parks as long as the animal is leashed and is up to date on vaccines just like any dog.

The growth of this movement has caught the attention of the local parks board. I am currently finalizing a formal proposal to amend the municipal code and have requested an agenda spot for our upcoming presentation.

Ferrets are sweet little animals that act very similar to dogs or cats. Yet less likely to attack someone like the other two animals.
Seeing as this park allows other animals I don't see why ferrets shouldnt be allowed. though they say this has been a rule for 20 years no where at the park does it state there are not allowed nor on their website. Ferrets have become a more common pet and get all their shots just like a dog so why shouldnt they be allowed at a park as long as they're leashed. They're amazing pets and not in any way harmful to anyone!
Ferrets are a domestic and can now receive rabies vaccines, and there is no reason to ban leashed, vaccinated ferrets from the park. Zero difference from a small dog!
Ferrets are domesticated and receive immunizations. Please lift this ban so they are able to enjoy the parks.
Please reconsider the obsolete policy of banning ferrets from a public space: It is unwarranted, unscientific and heavy-handed.
There is no reason a ferret shldnt be allowed in a park as long as they are on a leash and havr had their shots just like cats and dogs

Ferrets not being allowed is such an old game. Get with the times, ferrets are great animals, great pets, and wouldn't dare hurt a fly. They are not capable of overpopulating if they were anything more than domesticated in the US bc American ferrets are fixed at a very young age.
