Petition to the Director of Studies Prof. Dr. Nanette Neuwahl

Petition to make alterations to the EIS programme so that the advertised options of the second semester are retained.

____________________

We request that such alterations as are necessary are made so that the advertised scope of specialisation in the choose of optional courses is available in the second semester of the EIS programme.

Whilst there are several ways this could be achieved, we propose the creation of two ‘baskets’ of core courses from the formerly obligatory courses. Students taking the EU Governance major would chose two core courses of the four compulsory courses for the previous ‘European Single Market’ and ‘Governance in the EU’ majors. Students taking the EU as an International Actor major would chose two core courses of the four compulsory courses for the previous ‘Europe as a Regional Actor’ and ‘Europe as a Global Actor’ majors. This option has been discussed with the administration and appears administratively possible.

We are asking for these alterations because we believe that the changes to the EIS programme are unacceptably retrospective. We applied for and accepted offers for the EIS programme based on the description available to us. At the time of our offers the second semester was described as having four majors, with two obligatory courses. In our interviews students were asked which of the four majors they were interested in. When we arrived in Natolin written materials on the campus described the course as maintaining this structure. We believe it is not reasonable to claim that the college could make any changes it desired to the programme to affect a promotion who applied on the basis of the previous structure.

It is our view that the College created a clear legitimate expectation for the Falcone & Borsellino promotion of the structure of the study programme. To change the structure in such a way that the student choice is restricted with no communication to the students undermines the legitimate expectation of the College’s customers, its students and their sponsors. We are therefore asking that alterations are made to ensure that this legitimate expectation is met.
