Healthcare
workers have been overworked and understaffed during COVID-19. They
understand the seriousness of COVID after working in the trenches for
the last year and a half.
Healthcare providers know that
patients have a right to bodily autonomy. Nursing ethics remind us to
avoid paternalism, the idea that the provider knows what is best for the
patient. Another ethical principle is nonmaleficence - do no harm.
Healthcare providers should not TELL patients what to do, especially if
there is any concern about potential harm.
Patients have the right to decide for themselves if they want the COVID vaccine.
Healthcare workers are patients too. We do not lose the
right to self determination by choosing to be in the healthcare field.
Healthcare providers must be able to chose for themselves if the COVID
vaccine is right for them.
Hospitals must not mandate the COVID vaccine. It is unethical and un-American.
Healthcare workers must be allowed to make their own healthcare decisions regarding the COVID vaccine.
