Full STEAM Ahead: Expand Bronx ASCS to Grades 9–12!
We, the undersigned parents, students, educators, and community members, proudly support the expansion of Bronx Arts and Science Charter School (Bronx ASCS) to include grades 9 through 12.
Since opening in 2019 under the management of iLearn Schools, Inc., Bronx ASCS has delivered exceptional, equitable, and innovative STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education to families in the Bronx. The school’s mission—to provide a high-quality, college-preparatory education for all students, regardless of background—has resulted in strong academic outcomes and overwhelming demand from families for continued education through high school.
Why Expansion Matters
- Bronx ASCS currently serves preschool, elementary, and middle school students in one of New York City’s most underserved communities.
- Over 88% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and approximately 12% are English Language Learners (ELLs) and 12% are students with disabilities (SWDs).
- Families have repeatedly expressed a clear desire for Bronx ASCS to add high school grades, ensuring students can continue their education in a rigorous, safe, and inclusive environment that nurtures college and career readiness.
A Proven Model of Success
- iLearn Schools’ network—including Bergen, Passaic, and Paterson ASCS in New Jersey—has achieved high school graduation rates of 95% or higher and college acceptance rates of over 90%.
- Graduates have collectively earned more than $7 million in college scholarships, and iLearn schools have received national recognition from GreatSchools.org, NJDOE, and the U.S. Department of Education.
- Bronx ASCS has already received major support through Bloomberg Philanthropies Summer Boost and CSP federal grants, expanding robotics, coding, and drone programs that prepare students for high-demand careers.
Stakeholder Support & Engagement
This petition demonstrates the community demand and broad stakeholder support required by the Charter Schools Office (CSO) for approval of grade expansion. Bronx ASCS has:
- Hosted engagement meetings to discuss the feasibility and design of a Bronx ASCS High School.
- Collected surveys and letters of intent from parents who wish to see their children continue through 12th grade.
- Consulted teachers, staff, and board members to ensure academic readiness, facility planning, and resource allocation.
- Secured letters of support from local elected officials and community leaders recognizing the importance of expanding access to quality, STEAM-based secondary education in the Bronx.
Our Shared Vision
By adding high school grades, Bronx ASCS will:
- Create a seamless K–12 pathway for Bronx students within a proven STEAM model.
- Expand college and career readiness programs, including AP courses, dual enrollment, robotics, and CTE-aligned coursework.
- Continue serving a diverse, Title I student body through weighted lotteries, multilingual outreach, tutoring, and targeted supports.
- Provide new opportunities for Bronx youth to graduate high school fully prepared for college, careers, and civic leadership.
We, the undersigned, believe the Bronx community deserves continued access to this high-quality educational option. We urge the New York State Education Department and Board of Regents to approve the Bronx ASCS high school expansion.
