There is no need for fire arms in a hospital, this should have been handled a humane way.

Cops shoot first and worry later. This is getting ridiculous

The on duty medical staff at St. Joseph's hospital were greatly remiss to let this situation get out of control. It is always their duty to CARE for the patient.

This is OUTRAGEOUS!! What has become of this Country???!

I am a nursing student about to graduate in December. It deeply saddens and frightens me that this kind of thing is happening over and over again. I find it particularly disturbing that it happened in a hospital, a place which should be a safe haven, a place of healing. Atrocious.

Shameful behavior by hospital staff and security. They must have never been trained in crisis management.

I wish your son a speedy recovery. I thank God that his life was spared. I think your sons, and your family's treatment by the Hospital staff is appalling. They would not have treated a White Family in this manner. It is so sad that everything is propagated by race. I spent a quarter of my life defending this country and the Constitution, to be treated daily like a Second Class citizen. If I seem bitter I am. I'm hopeful that you and your family will pursue this matter. There were Two crimes committed on the 8th floor. Your son was assaulted with a deadly weapon, and the officer was shooting to kill, but God said no. You and your family were denied your rights as a parent to speak on the behalf or spend time with your son.

I stand with the medical community. These men should be charged with assault and should not be working as a so-called "Peace Officer."

Outrageous. Off duty police should be just that...off duty.

It's heartbreaking that this young man could be shot at the hospital from which he went seeking help. It makes one feel like our lives don't matter. Our humanity is undervalued and not recognized. I hope this petition helps in avoiding such an unnecessary and violent incident from happening again at a hospital, a school, a theater...

There is no place for guns in hospitals. It is outrageous that police can have access to a floor with patients and shoot someone who is there to be cured. No guns should be allowed in hospitals!

I stand with these who truly are concerned and who do seek justice in this and other like matters. The UN issued standards that all "police" must abide under because they are under the UN nonetheless (December 9, 1945, the International Organization Immunities Act relinquished every public seat and office of the U.S. to the United Nations; and UN’s Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials. “Any use of firearms by police must be in accordance with the UN’s Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials. Article 9: 'Law enforcement officials shall not use firearms against persons except in self-defence or defence of others against the imminent threat of death or serious injury, to prevent the perpetration of a particularly serious crime involving grave threat to life, to arrest a person presenting such a danger and resisting their authority, or to prevent his or her escape, and only when less extreme means are insufficient to achieve these objectives. In any event, intentional lethal use of firearms may only be made when strictly unavoidable in order to protect life") .

A sad example set by supposedly one of this country's leading hospitals. Seems like it is time for an "All Stop" so that management can pull their heads out of their butts and train the staff on how to properly care for those in need.... Oh wait a minute - you are part of the Medical Industrial Complex, so you wouldn't know anything about ethics....

Writing from both sides of the issue, I am more than appalled at the lack of caring showed not only by the hospital and its staff, but by the security force for creating and making worse an easily diffusible situation, and the police department for charging the victim of a senseless shooting – an unwitting participant – with the crime committed by the security force. The hospital was told of his mental state, but they discharged the patient anyway. Then, after the lack of care and attention the hospital showed the PATIENT, turning him away after family cried out for help for their son, causing the situation that led to the security officers – who were apparently well aware of said patient’s mental state – shoot him and almost kill him. Then, for the police to charge the patient – the victim – with a crime that doesn’t exist exacerbates the problems - none of which appear to be brought on or caused by the patient. This is not only unprecedented in its egregiousness and lack of compassion, but it's also quite possibly evidence of malpractice on behalf of the discharging doctors, and criminal on the part of the security guards and police. I hope every person part of the chain of events that led to the patient's being shot for no reason is investigated, and brought to justice via all civil and criminal means allowed by law.

I have diagnosed depression and anxiety, and I have had outbursts of anger and aggresion while experiencing a crisis. I see in the treatment of this young man the very trend that makes me fear going to a hospital when in crisis.

The first thi g i thought when I started to read this is. Since when do nursrs need guns to restrain. When i workrd er and someone was out of control meds and leather restraints took care of it. In all my years we never had to shoot anyone

Patients go to hospital to look for care and solution to their problem , not to be abused or get killed. We should treat them with compassion and dignity , not with hate and violence . The main focus of the staff of any hospital is to provide the best treatment to their patient and bring a end to their pain and sufferance . Our obligation is to give them comfort and hope by going to the bottom of their no matter what behavior they may exhibiting . As far as I know , nobody choose to have delirium , dementia, a chronic/acute health issue or/and a mental health breakdown . Every hospital must have the appropriate mean to control an agitated patient without causing any harm to him or her . That is basic. That was clearly an act of injustice , horror barbarism and an assault to health care . This is really scary and it hurts just thinking about it . MHGratia , MD

I am married to a physician and couldn't agree more with this petition.

I am a parent of a child with mental health issues. This could have very easily been our family story. Our wish is all law enforcement personnel be adequately trained to deal with these types of issues.

Medical professionals finally taking a stand against police brutality WILL make a difference.
