We, the undersigned members of Actors’ Equity Association, in an effort to achieve health equity, strongly support universal, single-payer healthcare on a national level.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made historical health inequities impossible to ignore and shown the necessity for a movement toward universal coverage for all members of our union, regardless of employment status.
We believe that union support of state-level healthcare legislation is an integral first step to the passage of a nationwide single-payer system.
To this end, we strongly urge the release of a resolution from our union leadership supporting the passage of The New York Health Act [A.5248a, S.3577a], a Single-Payer healthcare system currently under consideration by the New York State Legislature. When enacted, The New York Health Act will provide comprehensive health coverage for everyone who works full-time or resides in New York state.

I am honestly overwhelmed by the steady outpouring of support from our fellow members. This movement belongs entirely to the people who continue to speak up for our collective health.

Please continue to make this a national program instead of just NY-centric. (I know you have to start somewhere.) As you create hashtags, please remember the union members OFF stage as well. Thank you for starting something.
Every member deserves access to quality health insurance, and this should only be the beginning. We cannot sit idly while the current system ignores the way our industry contributes and further exacerbates the harms of racial capitalism.
The pandemic has put in a stark light how inadequate and deadly the current state of healthcare coverage is in the USA. Covered members of Actors' Equity have the closest to what everyone in the country deserves, but typically only a small percentage of its members are covered, and it is a system based on people ALMOST covering, and failing to do so. There's a better way, but it takes courage and work. Join us!
Get health insurance out of union compensation packages, and get more money in working artists’ pockets! Only the most privileged Equity members ever earn health care through work, but every single member deserves access to high quality care.
Healthcare is a human right! The future of our industry depends on un-tethering healthcare from employment.
Paul, We could not agree more. With a Single Payer System, healthcare will be provided to all people living or working within a specific area. In the case currently being considered, we would be supporting The New York Health Act, but later expanding to all states and the entire US. Even in a good year, only 12-14% of AEA dues-paying members receive coverage through The Equity League Plan. That number is dropping. A single payer system is the ONLY way to cover all Equity members.
