AUB Alumni and students statement condemning the policies of its current administration

No to the expulsion of the workers

We, graduates and students of the American University of Beirut, are writing this petition to express our categorical rejection of the AUB administration’s latest policies and practices, and have come together to voice that:

● We condemn the injustice reflected by the administration’s latest action of firing over 800 employees with no previous notice and in such a demeaning manner. The practices in no way represent the core values of ethics, justice, and equality which we wish to represent.

● We support the wrongfully expelled workers in their struggle to be reinstated, and the current AUB workers’ right to establish an autonomous and democratic union, free from subjugation by sectarian political parties or the administration.

● We blatantly refuse the AUB administration’s flagrant interference in Lebanese politics, threatening the political/apolitical diversity of the university and crippling the healthy balance of the democratic process.

● We do not accept that this academic institution, which has achieved so much in the academic and medical fields, be dragged into hierarchical corruption due to personal interests, while the caliber of its academic and medical services is compromised.

● We demand the implementation of a transparent monitoring and anti- corruption systems, investing efforts into cost containment, and maintaining the academic and medical caliber of the university and the medical center.

Regarding the position taken by the WAAAUB

● We announce that the recent communication of the WAAAUB (published on the 30th of June 2020) does not represent AUB Alumni community. We recognize that this communication serves to give legality to the illegal action taken by the AUB administration.

● We question the legitimacy of the WAAAUB, whose members were appointed by the president of the University without democratic elections, and as such, work for the interests and benefits of the administration, and not those of its student nor alumni.

● Furthermore, our strongest objection lies in the latest bylaws of the WAAAUB, which have been designed to give power to AUB administration and President over the alumni, changing the alumni association’s role from that of a managing entity for alumni chapters, into an entity that acts as a Board of Advisors to the President. Based on the new bylaws, WAAAUB association lost its autonomy and vital role in supporting its alumni and the interests of the university.

● We demand that WAAAUB stops issuing statements on our behalf and we ask that in case future communication is to be shared, a survey is sent ahead to collect majority alumni opinion, and to continue as such until we have official alumni representation based on valid bylaws.

بيان خريجات/خريجي و تلامذة الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت المندّد بسياسات إدارتها الحالية

رفضا لطرد العاملات و العمال

نحن، خريجات/خريجي وتلامذة الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت، ننشر هذا الإلتماس للتعبير عن رفضنا القاطع لسياسات إدارة الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت وممارساتها. وقد اجتمعنا للتعبير عن ذلك من خلال النقاط التالية:

● ندين الظلم الذي يعكسه الإجراء الأخير الذي اتخذته الإدارة بفصل أكثر من 800 موظفة وموظف دون سابق إنذار وبهذه الطريقة المهينة. إن هذه الممارسات لا تمثّل القيم الأساسية للعدالة والمساواة التي نأمل تطبيقها.

● نحن ندعم العاملات والعمال المطرودين في نضالهم من أجل العودة إلى وظائفهم، كما وحق العاملات والعمال الحاليين في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت بتأسيس نقابة ديمقراطية مستقلة، بعيدًا عن سيطرة الأحزاب السياسية الطائفية أو الإدارة.

● نرفض بشكل صارخ تدخل إدارة الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت في السياسة اللبنانية، مهدّدة التنوع السياسي وغير السياسي للجامعة الأميركية في بيروت والتوازن الصحي للعملية الديمقراطية.

● لا نقبل أن تنجرّ هذه المؤسسة التي كانت بمثابة نموذج يحتذى به للعديد من المؤسسات الأكاديمية والطبية في لبنان والمنطقة، إلى الفساد الهرمي بسبب المصالح الشخصية، في حين أن مستوى خدماتها الأكاديمية والطبية عرضة للخطر.

● نطالب بتطبيق أنظمة رصد شفافة بهدف محاربة الفساد، واستثمار الجهود في احتواء التكاليف ، والحفاظ على المستوى الأكاديمي والطبي للجامعة والمركز الطبي.

فيما يتعلق بالموقف الذي اتخذته جمعية خريجي الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت WAAAUB

● نعلن أن الرسالة الأخيرة للجمعية (المنشورة في 30 حزيران 2020) لا تمثل خريجات وخريجي الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت، ونقرّ بأن هذا المنشور يعمل على إعطاء الشرعية للإجراءات غير القانونية التي اتخذتها إدارة الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت.

● نشكك في شرعية جمعية الخريجين، التي تم تعيين أعضائها من قبل رئيس الجامعة بدون انتخابات ديمقراطية. وبذلك، فهي تعمل من أجل مصالح وقرارات الإدارة، وليس مصلحة الطلاب أو الخريجات والخريجين.

● علاوة على ذلك، يكمن اعتراضنا الأقوى في أحدث نظام داخلي لجمعية الخريجين، والذي تمّ تصميمه لإعطاء السلطة لإدارة الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت ورئيسها على الخريجات والخريجين، وتغيير دور جمعية الخريجين من دورها ككيان إداري لفصول الخريجين، إلى كيان يعمل بمثابة مجلس مستشارين للرئيس. وبناءً على النظام الداخلي الجديد، فقد فقدت الجمعية استقلاليتها ودورها الحيوي في دعم الخريجات والخريجين ومصالح مجتمع الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت.

● نطالب بأن تتوقف جمعية خريجي الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت WAAAUB عن إصدار البيانات نيابة عنا ونطلب أنه في حال إصدار أي بيان في المستقبل، أن يتم إرسال استطلاع مسبق لجمع رأي الأغلبية من الخريجات والخريجين، حتى يكون لدينا تمثيلاً رسمياً بناءً على نظام داخلي حقيقي.
