Today, orangutans are only found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. These Asian islands are constantly subjected to the deforestation of their rainforests. The rainforests are cleared to create palm oil plantations. We have a huge need for palm oil, as it is used in everything from hair care products to candy. However, some companies have partnered with the RSPO (Roundtable On Sustainable Palm Oil), and resolved to use sustainable palm oil. This means that the forests are reused. To help the orangutans, you should use products with sustainable palm oil or no palm oil at all. The rainforests are cleared using slash and burn techniques. Orangutans live in the treetops. If the rainforests are cut down, then they lose their habitats and die. The few who survive are eaten by predators, or worse they wander onto the palm oil plantations where they are tortured/raped/killed. You can go to our website to donate money to the Philadelphia Zoo to adopted an orangutan (you won’t actually receive an orangutan). Remember to spread this around town.
