Crowded classrooms are impeding the academic success of our students! With additional needs of many students in this grade, we believe that their needs will best be met in smaller class sizes.

  • 68 students split between 2 classes 2017-18 school year
  • Only 2 teachers currently provided for upcoming 2018-19 year
  • Teachers provide accommodations for 39 Students (59%) although only 12 (18%) have IEP/504
  • Class of 2026 scored below or well below standardized testing in the 2017-18 school year:
    • Dibels benchmark levels: 38% at start of year, 32% mid-year
    • SAGE tests: 40% of students tested in Language Arts, 51% in Math
  • One-third to one-half of the Class of 2026 need significant extra support

We the undersigned are concerned parents and guardians of these students who urge the Davis County School District to act now to provide an additional teacher for the upcoming school year.

We have loved our teacher this year, however the class is too big and needs are not being met. My daughter has needed some extra accommodations but because she’s “gifted” and so many kids are below she’s been overlooked. Please let us have another teacher next year. The teachers and students need a chance to thrive not just survive.

I have volunteered every other week with this class have worried all year. I think a third teacher is definitely needed. One year at Holbrook they had 2 full time teachers and one half day teacher in a large grade. So there were three classes in the morning to learn science, math, language. Then in the afternoon they met as two classes and did art, pe, computer, etc. If we can't get a third teacher maybe even a part time one? I love Holbrook and our teachers. They are amazing! I would love to see more help next year!

I am a homeschool teacher with a Masters degree in Education. Even so, I fully support this petition because I feel that ALL children deserve the greatest amount of educational support available!

If you ignore the class size numbers and focus on the test scores, you'd be liable to blame this year's teachers. That would be a mistake. You cannot find a more exemplary pair of skilled and caring teachers anywhere. They are providing accommodations and/or IEP/504 for 77% of the children in this class. Combine that statistic with the sheer class size, and you get the testing results you see here. This isn't a general complaint about class sizes, this is about a very specific set of kids whose needs simply are not being met. Continuing down this path will simply lead to further deterioration of the results we hope for for our children. I urge Davis County School District to make the right decision for these kids and hire another teacher so that all the children in this group can get the attention they obviously need.

My son struggled so much this year learning with such s large class. They need a third teacher so the kids can get the attention and help they need.

I sincerely hope we can find a way to get another teacher for this grade--the difference between a class of 34 and a class of 23 is tremendous. Thank you, fourth-grade teachers for rising to the challenge this year--I know it couldn't have been easy!

Those poor teachers with 34 kids in their rooms. They have done an amazing job this year but I can’t imagine it’s been easy. This has been by far the hardest year for my son in school. I hope they can get another teacher next year. 34 students is way to many in a class.
