The bill seeks to put a cap on the amount of carbon dioxide that can be released into the atmosphere by U.S. industries. Proponents of this bill claim that carbon dioxide emissions are contributing to global warming. Companies that pollute beyond permitted levels would be required to trade for credits in the open market. That bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives in June. However, the U.S. Senate has still not acted on the proposed legislation. As it stands, this bill would usher in the single largest tax in the history of our nation, along with an unprecedented degree of federal intrusion into every American farm, home and workplace. These energy taxes will cause every product that uses energy in its creation, cultivation or transportation to become more expensive, forcing hard-working Americans to bear massive new costs and kicking the legs out from underneath a national economy that is already wobbling.
