The administration has finally agreed to grant the tuition reduction we requested for this quarter. This victory belongs to the hundreds of students who spoke up about the true value of our educational experience. While I am relieved to see this result, we must remain diligent as we transition into …

We, the students of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, petition the institute to credit all currently enrolled students with a 50% discount on the quarterly tuition costs.

At present, FIDM announced:

  1. "In an effort to protect the health and safety of the FIDM community, we will shift from on-campus classes to a virtual learning period through the end of the spring quarter.
  2. "All on-campus events are also canceled through the end of the quarter."
  3. "The Spring 2020 quarter will now begin on Monday, April 27 and end on Friday, July 3."

Many student’s feel a large amount of angst because our tuition is mainly based on the provided resources at school such as: FIDM Library, Hope Annex Studios, 5th Floor Studios as well as books & supplies but these resources are no longer guaranteed. There is an estimated 2,200 students currently attending the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and 500 students & parents have signed this petition calling the school to action with one demand:

  • Due to the newfound lack of substantial & fundamental resources to give each student the learning experience needed to excel, we the students and parents of The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising demand a reduction in tuition by 50% for the Spring 2020 Quarter.

If the school doesn't meet these demands we as students will be forced to disengage from the Spring 2020 Quarter and have no other option than to withdraw.

Art and design schools cannot provide the same level of education online as in-person. It’s extremely unfair to expect students, many who don’t receive financial aid, to pay the same amount in tuition for little to none of the resources that make attending an institution such as FIDM worthwhile. Partially refund tuition!

As a FIDM student and it being my last quarter, I do not find it right to pay full when the resources I used at school prior, won’t be accessible for me and the rest of the other students for this spring quarter. Help us out!

I believe we pay for the experience, the connections with other students & staff, the tools offered by the school and the hands on experience guided by industry professionals. i believe online classes will not provide students any of these things & therefor we are not receiving what we pay for. tuition should be adjusted accordingly.

I actually am skipping out on this semester.. none of my hands on sewing fashion design classes are worth it to be without the tools and hands on experience. I have yet to drop from all my classes.

We are paying high tuition price for the whole experience! Without all the FIDM resources and hands-on activities, FIDM is just like any other community college and it is not fair to charge us FULL PRICE!

We cannot learn the same way online that we can in a classroom. Students who are responsibly self quarantining or are stuck at home in another state will not have access to the library, sewing machines, idea center etc; This is a hard time for everyone financially, we shouldn’t be paying an entire quarters tuition when we only get half the the resources.
