Over the last 3 years, Chris Smith has been one of the only people in Berkeley who has been actively standing up for the patient’s rights. As a patient himself, Chris has been up against the entire City of Berkeley, defending OUR rights for safe access to medical marijuana. 40 Acres was the only location in Berkeley where all qualified patients were welcomed into his home, so they could have a safe, diverse, comfortable place to medicate. In the company of fellow medical marijuana community members, patients had finally found a place to call home. The City of Berkeley has recently made it their mission to revoke these patients rights. There has been an alarmingly urgent attack on Chris Smith, saying the building isn’t up to code, but instead of questioning why the slumlord hasn’t had the building up to code in the last 35 years, the patients are suffering. City Council has declared 40 Acres a public nuisance, even though Chris Smith has been requesting assistance from the City of Berkeley to help legitimize the property.
