Commitment Statement:Park 51 Islamic Community Center
We the undersigned Episcopalians would like to express our support for the building of an Islamic Community Center two blocks away from Ground Zero. We believe that it will send a message to the world that the attacks of 9 years ago did not represent Islam as a whole and that we are neighbors striving for peace and justice together. Jesus tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves. As Christians and Muslims, we are not merely neighbors but also brothers and sisters following the Abrahamic path along with our Jewish brothers and sisters.

Trinity Church, the oldest Episcopal church in New York, whose St. Paul’s Chapel stands next to Ground Zero, and where George Washington worshiped when he was first elected President, has shown us the way forward. They are publicly welcoming the building of the Park 51 Community Center as a “neighbor who shares common values of compassion and understanding and a commitment to reconciliation and peace.” For this reason, we deem it appropriate to support an Islamic Community Center that bridges the gap of misunderstanding not only between the People of the Book but with humanity in general.

Let us strive together as brothers and sisters to bring about the peaceable kingdom of justice promised in our scriptures by visiting each others places of worship and homes. May the Park 51 Islamic Center be such a place of listening and dialogue as we merge our respective visions of peace and justice into one. Let us then act together to make this common vision a reality, JOINT COMMITMENT FROM Episcopal Peace Fellowship (epfnational.org) and the Episcopal Veterans Fellowship(episcopalveterans2008.blogspot.com)
