This petition is to urge the City of Burlingame to take decisive steps to address the derelict never-completed housing development in the 1800 Block of Trousdale Drive. Dubbed "Chateau Trousdale" in the construction permit, but also commonly known as "Sunrise Living," this construction project ceased construction mid-way through development in 2009. Since then the owner has renewed the permit, but done no work on the project. This now well-known community eyesore (google maps on 1818 Trousdale for a look) consumes half a block on Trousdale, and is the first thing visitors to Mills Peninsula notice when they arrive. The rotting hulk of the incomplete building has progressed in its deterioration after years of its underlying structure being exposed to the elements, and poses a safety hazard as well as an unwelcome aethestic for the area. This petition requests of the Burlingame Planning and Council to deny any further construction permit renewal for the "Sunrise Living" project based on the following: - The project has been in a non-functioning state for nearly 4 years. - No new work has been done on the actual site since work ceased earlier. - A permit renewal was granted already by the council, yet no evident site work commenced during the renewal period. - The half-complete structure has deteriorated; any engineer would tell you that the existing structure is unusable in its current state. - The property owners do not appear to be acting in good faith; rather they continue to seek permit renewals with the apparent goal of keeping the project in its current holding pattern of non-activity. - The residents, businesses and Mills Peninsula workers and patients have been forced to drive and walk by this well-known "eyesore" for far too long. Further this petition seeks that: - The City of Burlingame pursue avenues to declare this property a Nuisance Property; - The City of Burlingame initiates legal action against the owners to level/clear the current deteriorating construction, before it weathers down to the point that it collapses on its own; - Failing action by the owners, the City should pursue avenues of Eminent Domain to take control of the property and resell or repurpose it for the benefit of the City. Please urge the City of Burlingame to take action. It's long past time to get tough with Chateau Trousdale.
