Removal of 10+ year ban on Used Vehicles in The commonwealth of The Bahamas

To all fellow Bahamians,
On the 27th of May 2015. our Government instituted a ban on all importations of Cars older than 10 years, saying that it is for environmental reasons. They have yet to state what these reasons are in any which way or form, other than repeating some rhetoric that some of the larger car lots and dealers gave them to say. No study has been given to the Bahamian people, no information, and certainly no logic.
I believe that this ban on vehicles will inflate the overall cost of vehicles on our islands due to higher initial costs for these vehicles in the foreign markets.

The climb toward a hundred signatures is exhausting but I am sticking with it. We need this threshold reached before I can force a conversation with my representative. Please send this link out to anyone who understands how these unnecessary costs are hurting our pockets.

It is very clear that this is a ploy to help the large dealers who are being undercut from people buying cars online. Ridiculous that the government would do this
This isn't the first time they've tried this. Conversely, I think it's ridiculous in a country with no reliable public transportation OR auto industry to have such high duties on vehicles. It's like they know people need cars so they hike the duty up. If you ban imports older than 10 years, you have to lower duties on new vehicles as well.
I'm definitely against this because I own a older car and as a mechanic I work on many of them to feed my family. And tell me what happens to the importation of real classics that hold more value than these toy cars they want everyone to drive??!!
I think that the condition of the car is of importance not the age. I also enjoy older cars and I'm sure my 98 daily driver or my 69 Sunday driver is in better condition than any 5 year old vehicle that hasn't been maintained.
The average salary of Bahamians does not allow for the purchase of a modern car. Especially with VAT now being charged on the purchase price and shipping. If the government was serious about the environment the first step is to take action on the dump fires.
Not everybody can afford a new car we need the option to get what we can afford

This ban on 10 years or older cars and the ban on all damaged cars would cause a detrimental trickle down effect that would put many hard working young Bahamians out of work and out on the streets. It would obviously affect the paint and body work shops. The tow truck companies. The paint supplies shops. The shipping companies and the like.
