Waipa Networks own investigation of Considerations of Alternatives states in section 2.4:
For the chosen connection between Hangatiki and Te Awamutu a high
level investigation was undertaken into the feasibility of undergrounding
a 1.25 kilometre section of the route as it traverses through Otorohanga
(as depicted in the Notice of Requirement this section of route “costed”
is different from the final preferred route through Otorohanga). Line
designers LineTech Consulting prepared a cost estimate which
indicated additional costs between $400,000 and $500,000 to place this
short section of the alignment underground.
$500,000 is not a lot to ask to save our town.
