The Ohio Assessment for Educators Social Studies licensure exam for middle level teacher candidates has been the topic of much debate amongst administrators, higher education faculty, and preservice teachers. Numerous meetings have been convened and committees formed to address growing concerns about the ability of the test to demonstrate teacher competency. Current issues with the exam include a low rate of passage rates, a misalignment between the OAE and middle childhood content standards, and a misalignment between the OAE and higher education preparation of teacher candidates, and a lack of adequate field testing. We are proposing that Ohio adopt the Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) with an additional written component in place of the OAE. An extended written response would allow a teacher candidate to demonstrate an integration of discipline-specific analytical skills with a deep understanding of content. The candidate will thoroughly research a topic area, evaluate the quality of the sources, perform a critical analysis of the material, communicate their findings in a written product, and effectively teach the content, thus better demonstrating the ability to teach the youth of Ohio. Please help us by showing your support in this movement and sign our petition. With your help, we can take back the test!
