The CCCC has given me so many professional opportunities over the years. From finding and joining a research group to the Research Network Forum. At the RNF I have shared my work and received feedback and now have been a Discussion Leader for many years. The RNF is the reason why my work, which started there, is now published.
This year I was looking forward to being part of the Executive Committee of the RNF and presenting with my book editors. All professional opportunities lost.

Despite the pressures from AI, we who have taught writing for years know that writing is thinking, learning, listening, relating, reaching out, contributing knowledge, participating as citizens. A lively exchange of best practices in our discipline invigorates our teaching of the vital ways of being and the skills that grow from writing competence. Our discipline needs a forum, especially in this historical/cultural moment of when humanities and universities themselves are under attack.

Having served in the EC twice in recent years and observed the tensions between Cs leadership and NCTE membership, I can’t say this move surprised me, though its abruptness certainly did. I look forward to identifying or creating a disciplinary home that is more than a “conference” of a broader parent org, now that our feet are firmly under us and we’re ready to do so, which I trust we are.

CCCC has been a monumental event shaping the early days of my academic and professional career. I, and many others, feel disrespected, undervalued, and betrayed by the very organization designed to support those in our discipline.

The history of the CCCCs and the contributions the conference and journal have provided the writing studies community have been completely overlooked or disregarded by NCTE "leadership." I couldn't agree more with Mike's statement. Taking a sledgehammer to the CCCCs is not the way forward.

CCCC has been a formative and supportive part of my professional teaching and research career for about 40 years. It has been profoundly important for me and for my students, both graduate and undergraduate. The actions of NCTE in this matter seem absurd to me. I agree that we must work together to find a new home for writing studies at the college level.

I'm a former chair of CCCC, and over the years have served on scholarship committees, caucuses, SIGS, the EC. I have also served NCTE's EC in a number of roles. I think what NCTE has overlooked in its recent rash decision is that the C's is far more than a convention, a gathering of people that could be served in November as well as in March. No, the C's is a locus for research, new ideas, political action, scholarship, quite independent of the NCTE activities.

Writing studies has a college and graduate level focus the NCTE cannot fully support, given their primarily K-12 orientation. They have also shown a level of hostility to the very culture that makes CCCC meaningful to me.

As a new faculty member (30+ years ago) at a large R1 hostile to writing instruction and instructors, CCCs gave me the professional language and support to speak with deans and provosts and to grow a successful and sustainable writing program that I was proud of. NCTE was never my professional home and it absolutely is not now. Memebership cancelled.
