We, concerned citizens of South Africa, call for urgent education reform that gives every learner a stronger, fairer chance to succeed. We ask for a complete transformation of the curriculum so that it supports real learning, practical skills, and preparation for life beyond the classroom.
We call for STEAM learning, the phasing out of Math literacy, and the guarantee that all learners learn Mathematics. We also ask for the reintroduction of skills-oriented subjects, because young people need knowledge that helps them think clearly, solve problems, and build a future.
Our schools also need functional libraries, science laboratories, and computer labs. Without these basics, too many learners are left behind before they even get a fair start. We further call for History to include the world’s history and to remain compulsory through grade 12, so that learners understand both their own society and the wider world.
We support raising the pass mark for every subject to 50%, and we call for daily reading for at least half an hour from grade 1 to 12 to strengthen reading skills across the country. These changes will help build critical thinkers and prepare young people to compete on the global stage.
We also call for better support for teachers, including increased remuneration, housing subsidies, and other benefits. Teachers carry the future of our nation, and they deserve conditions that respect their work.
The struggle of pre-1994 was for human dignity. The struggle of our generation is for economic freedom, and education is one of the surest tools to achieve it. It is time for change.
