Seizure Safe Schools have clear, consistent steps to support students who experience seizures. Kansas schools do a great job caring for students every day. 1 in 10 will have a seizure in their lifetime. 1 in 26 will be diagnosed with epilepsy.
This initiative builds on that work by giving staff training and a shared plan, so they know how to respond safely and support students consistently.
The five main parts are:
• Train all school staff in basic seizure first aid.
• Keep an individualized seizure action plan on file for students who need one.
• Ensure designated staff are trained to give prescribed rescue medication according to the student’s plan.
• Provide age-appropriate education about seizures and epilepsy to students.
• Protect staff who respond in good faith.
My child suffers from an ultra-rare genetic disorder called SYNGAP1. This disorder causes epilepsy.
