Do not make Master of the Ship a scape goat every time. He must be released and granted bail.
How can master of ship know if flag has cancelled his registery, if Ship owners do not convey this to master.
He wasn't aware of flag removal and was innocent in true spirit. He did not have the intention of committing wilfull crime.

Seafarer don't know about legality of cargo, master receives part information only wrt to cargo, if governments have guts then arrest ship and the people who are involved in fixing the cargo or the owners.

I am at sea from 1990. So far what ever happened, 90% seafarers are only victimised by any law or court. Investigate thoroughly and if there is no evidence for the crime by the seafarer, release him immediately. Simply keeping him in custody and later relieving is bigger crime than what so ever the real crime.

Seafaring is the backbone of world’s economy. But, the men manning the ships are most neglected, n disregarded. The Iran - US conflict & Strait Of Hormuz saga has had too many innocent seafarers suffering for no fault of theirs.
