Starting October 5th, Ashland High School will implement a new cell phone policy using Doorman, an app that restricts phone functionality when students tap into classroom tags.

We believe Doorman raises serious concerns about:

1. Privacy & Student Rights
Requiring third-party software on students’ personal devices raises concerns about privacy and control.

2. Cost
We question whether school funds should be spent on an app when less invasive alternatives are available.

3. Practicality
We believe Doorman may create unnecessary complications for students, families, and staff.

For more information, see our full document.

Petition to Reconsider Mandatory Doorman Implementation

We, the undersigned students, parents, and members of the Ashland High School community, respectfully ask Ashland High School to reconsider and discontinue its plan to require students to install Doorman on their personally owned devices.

We recognize the importance of maintaining focused, productive classrooms and support reasonable restrictions on personal device use during instructional time. However, we believe requiring third-party software on students’ personal devices is an unnecessary and overly invasive solution.

We ask the school to:

  1. Cancel the requirement that students install Doorman on personally owned devices.
  2. Return to a non-invasive method of enforcing the school’s existing phone-use policy, such as classroom phone caddies or another school-controlled storage system.
  3. Consult with students and parents before implementing any future technology that would be required on personally owned devices.

We are not asking for unrestricted phone use during school. We are asking the school to enforce its phone policy without requiring students to install third-party software on their personal devices.

If you support reconsidering the mandatory implementation of Doorman, please add your name below.

Schools shouldn’t be allowed to force me to download an app that can take control of my phone and data

I'm all in. Why spend money on fixing a system that doesn't need to be fixed while our athletic programs and school devices need more funding? Priorities, people.

This doesn’t make sense at all! We have a working system so why are we changing it? This violates our privacy and just isn’t a good system.

This is a violation of our privacy. I was reading about it last month and it says it gives them access to you search history, messages, and anything else that uses data. If it gets hacked, it would affect all of us and is just not right. Spyware is not the only answer to the phone problem in schools and some of my friends in other districts said that they are using the phone caddy system because of the new law. The same system we are about to stop using that works just fine
