There has been many times my kids tell me they skipped lunch because the line was too long or didn't finish because of time.

The CDC themselves recommend at least 30 minutes for school lunches to allow for proper digestion, socialization and needed relief from curricular activities. Borrowing 5 minutes from the periods before and after the allotted lunch/recess breaks would cause minimal disruption to the adjacent time periods.
While there may be no legally required minimum, we routinely respect federal guidelines in other sectors of our lives, why stop with our children’s nutrition?

If I’m REQUIRED by New York State labor laws to have 30 mins of uninterrupted lunch as an adult, my 4 and 6 year old sure as heck deserve at least that.

Children should not be rushed to eat. Then rushed to play. Sure seems like a perfect way to make a lot of upset bellies to me.

As a parent of three kids in this school, I believe longer lunch periods are more important than extra playtime. Our kids need enough time to eat their meals without feeling rushed, especially when lunch lines take up so much of their time. Proper time to eat should be a priority, and our children shouldn’t have to choose between finishing their food and enjoying a few minutes of play. Their health and well-being should come first.
