There comes a time in every podcast listener's life when staying silent is no longer an option.
For us, that time has come.
We are loyal listeners of the Indo Sport Podcast. We have laughed with Bits & Bobs. We have argued with Bits & Bobs. We have spent far too much time discussing Bits & Bobs with each other afterwards.
And yet, every few weeks, we open Spotify with excitement, scroll down to see who's joining Joe...
John Greene.
Our hearts sink.
To be absolutely clear, we have nothing against John Greene the man.
We have nothing against John Greene the Sunday Independent Sports Editor.
We wish both of them well.
Our issue is with the emergence of a third John Greene:
John Greene, Expert on Absolutely Everything.
Football? John has a view.
Rugby? John has a view.
Golf? John has a view.
GAA? Of course John has a view.
Whatever the sport, whatever the topic, John is ready.
But this is precisely the problem.
Bits & Bobs was never meant to be about expertise.
It is about sports journalists becoming sports fans for an hour. It's about half-baked opinions. Going off on tangents. Talking absolute shite. Getting things wrong. Laughing at each other. And occasionally stumbling across a genuinely interesting point along the way.
There are experts for rugby.
There are experts for football.
There are experts for GAA.
There are experts for golf.
There cannot be one expert for everything.
And there certainly doesn't need to be one on Bits & Bobs.
We acknowledge that John occupies a senior position within the Sunday Independent. We respect that position enormously.
Indeed, we would encourage him to devote even more of his time to it.
As much time as possible, really.
Particularly during the recording of Bits & Bobs.
So today, after considerable discussion, absolutely no consultation with the Indo Sport Podcast, and with a mandate bestowed entirely upon ourselves, we are launching this campaign.
Our demand is simple.
Not fewer appearances.
Not a reduced role.
Not a trial period.
No more John Greene on Bits & Bobs.
Joe. Conan. Dan. Will. Ronan. The wider Indo Sport family.
The solution is already in the building.
We don't want experts.
We want fans.
We don't want authority.
We want nonsense.
We don't want John Greene explaining sport to us.
We want Bits & Bobs back.
