To the Macroeconomics teaching team and the GBBA Program Direction,
We, first-year GBBA students at ESSEC Business School, respectfully request that the grading of the upcoming Macroeconomics midterm be adjusted, through lower grade boundaries or more lenient grading, so that it reflects the conditions under which we have had to prepare.
We take this course seriously and want to do well. However, several issues have made it very difficult to prepare properly:
- No lecture slides. The slides have not been shared with us, so we have no clear reference for what was covered in class.
- No guidance on formulas. We have not been told which formulas we need to know for the exam, so we cannot focus our revision.
- Errors in the course booklet. The physical booklet is our main study resource, but it contains many typos and mistakes. These make several sections confusing and hard to rely on.
- Poor communication of SPOC assignments. SPOC assignments were not communicated clearly or early enough. As a result, many students could not plan their studies ahead and fell behind through no fault of their own.
Because of these issues, many of us do not know what to study and do not have enough material to study effectively. It would be unfair for our results to reflect gaps in the course materials rather than our actual understanding of macroeconomics.
We therefore ask that:
- The grade boundaries be lowered, or the grading eased, for this midterm.
- If possible before the exam, students receive a list of the formulas we are expected to know and corrections for the errors in the booklet.
We appreciate the work of the teaching team and hope this request will be received in the constructive spirit in which it is made. Thank you for your understanding and consideration.
