Restrict the over-the-counter sale of 7-Hydroxymitragynine in head shops, convenience stores, and liquor stores in Fairfield, Iowa.
This petition urges local leaders, community members and Fairfield store owners to take immediate action to reduce access to 7-Hydroxymitragynine, or 7OH, a concentrated compound derived from kratom leaf that is now being sold in ways that put our community at genuine risk. It's an opiate crisis right under our noses.
Kratom leaf, in its raw natural form, has been used by many people as a tool to help manage pain and stay away from pharmaceuticals, retaining autonomy with acute and chronic conditions.
7OH is simply not the same as Kratom. When kratom is extracted and concentrated into 7OH, it becomes stronger than morphine. It binds more strongly to pain receptors than morphine and creates a fast and powerful dependence. It pulls people into harm before they realize what is happening. It requires rehabilitation with heavy levels of addiction.
Families and friends can watch someone deteriorate from this chemical in painful ways, into someone unrecognizable and the damage does not stay with one person. It reaches the whole community. 7OH is being sold as candy, chew tablets, gummies, and shots, making it look harmless and easy to buy. However it is not cheap. One package of 6 can cost around $45.
In Fairfield, it is available in all three liquor stores in town. Products with this level of risk simply should not be treated like ordinary shelf items at the register. Its effects are worse than alcohol.
We are in process of collating police reports, victim impact statements, and first-hand accounts connected to 7OH and the harm it is genuinely causing. We have genuine evidence.
We ask for real restrictions on sales, stronger local oversight of all substances being sold, and a clear commitment to keep this product out of easy reach in Jefferson County. Our community deserves protection, clarity, and honest action before more lives are affected.

I had a horrible experience being led by misinformation and almost ended up in the hospital. This should not be sold recreationally. It should be used therapeutically under the guidance of a medical professional - not someone without extensive knowledge of the negative side effects on human health this substance can cause.
I know a young lady who had serious problems, including addiction, from taking kratom
Two friends went into psychosis and became incarcerated on this stuff recently.
Anything that addictive should be illegal.
Let’s also get the meth off the street too
I have seen drugs and alcohol impact enough people we don’t need it to harm others
