Unlike their African counterparts, only a tiny fraction (roughly 2% or less) of male Sri Lankan elephants (Elephas maximus maximus) actually grow tusks. This genetic rarity makes every single tusker an irreplaceable national treasure.
Yet, day by day, these magnificent symbols of the island's wild heritage are vanishing.
