Should assisted suicide be made legal within the united kingdom?

We as a society constantly go about euthanising our pets. Yet when it comes down to making euthanasia legally applicable to the local populace. People and governments refuse to listen.

There seems to be a block that we as a society cannot overcome. Countries like Belguim and Switzerland have made the act of assisted suicide legal labeling it civilised euthanasia.

It is legal on the grounds that you commit yourself to an examination by a board of professionals. Only once they have presided over your case and a decision is made can you undergo your course of ‘exit’.

Within the United Kingdom however as a Catholic country, the concept of assisted suicide or suicide in itself is frowned upon. Those in power do not see what happens within our care establishments so are inappropriately placed to make a difference.

The staff in hospitals and care homes, however, be it doctors or care workers are in such a position to experience the pain of those suffering. The phrase ‘I want to die’ is heard all too often. But what happens when this want to die becomes a question. This question asks you to help end someone’s pain. A question where the words, ‘can’, ‘please help’ and ‘will you’ are used. The result of such a question is that you are left hopelessly denying the person suffering the release they crave.

For this reason, some doctors have DNR (do not resuscitate) orders placed upon themselves to prevent any suffering that may incur from resuscitation.

We all would much rather have a peaceful and dignified passing than an end to life wracked with doubt, self-loathing deprived of our liberty.

By signing this petition you will help support the right of choice that we should all be given at the end of our days.

‘My choice’ should be the last choice that matters.
