Griffith University should develop a new enrolment system for its students. The current system is outdated, slow, and extremely frustrating to use. The entire enrolment process causes students a multitude of problems, and these need to be addressed immediately if Griffith University is to be regarded as a leading education institution in Queensland. Issues that students believe require urgent attention include: • Accurate opening times for each student’s enrolment cart. Many students can spend up to an hour after their specified time attempting to access the enrolment facilities. • Even if students plan their classes prior to enrolment day, this has very little, if any, effect on the overall process. It saves no time and in some cases, does not keep record of the planned classes at all. • Many classes are already filled before a majority of students can enrol. For example, if classes in a certain course can be taken as electives by other courses (such as psychology classes), then by the time psychology students can actually enrol, most (often all) of the tutes are already full. • For this reason, staggering enrolment times for students depending on what they are studying is an unfair process. Each student should have a fair go at enrolling in the classes they initially choose. • There are not enough tutes set at reasonable times. Either all of the tutes are set for after the lecture which fill up extremely quickly, or tutes are only scheduled on days separate to the lecture. • The enrolment cart is not user friendly. You have no way of seeing what classes you want and how they fit with other classes while you are planning. The entire process involves pencil and paper, frantic clicking between screens and meticulous recording of class numbers and codes. This is all before we even attempt to enrol. • The enrolment cart and enrolment process open at the same time. This makes no sense, as the former is supposed to be a planning aid for the latter. It is rendered useless considering the system is under such immense pressure at the time of enrolment. • If you experience difficulties with any of the above issues, phoning the help desk on the day of enrolment continually elicits the same response: “You’re not the only one. Just keep trying.” Hours after my enrolment cart opened, I am still unable to enrol in any of my classes. I ask that everyone who has experienced any of the above problems to sign this petition in the hope that next semester, Griffith will develop a much more efficient system to save time, stress and tears for its students! Come on Griffith, if you can raise the amenities fees, you can at least give us a reliable website!
