We, the students of the University of York, want our university to commit to giving us a Nightline flat on the Hes East campus. This doesn't have to be a new building, but rather a conversion of a building that already exists. Jane Grenville is currently in talks about providing this new flat, and this petition is to show student support and to encourage its progression. York's current student population is increasingly spreading across two campuses, Hes East and Hes West. This will put a strain on our welfare services - indeed, one BBC article [1] cites that in 2010, 40% of support service providers in higher education felt “unable to cope with the level of demand”. However, Nightline can provide extra support for this increasing student population, and in hours that other welfare services on Hes East aren't available. Hes East Nightline runs on Mondays 8.00pm-11.30pm and won an award from National Nightline [2]. However, on the other six days of the week, the Hes West Nightline flat is nearly inaccessible to those of us who live on Hes East, with buses between Hes East and West not running during the night. It's important to make sure that students who live on both campuses have a fair access to the welfare services available, and the sooner Nightline has a Hes East flat the sooner this will be the case. The NHS states that mental health problems are more prevalent in students than the general population [3]. The Royal College of Psychiatrists issued a report [4] recommending that higher education welfare "be maintained and, when possible, expanded". 63% of universities report increased psychological distress from their students [5] and the Samaritans highlight "issues with studies" as being one of the top three reasons that younger people attempt suicide [6]. Students moving in to the new accommodation on Hes East are just as vulnerable to mental health issues as those on Hes West, and we think that a Nightline space on Hes West is vitally important in ensuring that all students have support when they need it. In conclusion, we fully support discussion about a Nightline space on Hes East, and would like that space to be provided as soon as possible. This is so that no matter which campus we live on, we know that during the night we can visit the Nightline Flat.
