Safeway at Encina Grande Shopping Center has proposed redevelopment of another super-sized Safeway across the street at Ygnacio/Oak Grove. We, the signers of this petition do not want another large shopping area here. We already have Countrywood Safeway (1.9 miles), Nob Hill (<.5miles), Trader Joe's (1.3 miles), and Fresh and Easy Market (1.5 miles) < 2 miles away from the existing Safeway at Encina. We do not need yet another grocery store and more foot and vehicle traffic that would result. We, the users of the Encina Safeway actually enjoy shopping at a smaller store. Items are more accessible to wheelchair users, seniors, and people who otherwise get overwhelmed in a large store of any kind. We, the signers of this petition, believe the existing businesses at Encina would die if Safeway moves across the street. Jobs and community services will be lost. Traffic will be worse. Ygnacio Valley Road is already a parking lot from around 4:30-6:30 Monday-Friday! Please do not move the Encina Safeway across Ygnacio Valley Road and don't take away our last patch of open space. Please don't pave over the small animals, butterflies, hummingbirds, etc. that call the Orchards home.
