Individuals in a free society retain the ability to express themselves openly. The democracy that is American explicitly states the freedoms that all citizens have towards speech, press, and other personal choices. Unless this school considers itself above the principles that its country abides by then these liberties must extend to its hallways. A single student can do what they want as long as it does not affect the lives of others. In the case of Devon Zimmermann and Oliver Dubinsky, the only affect their actions may impact onto people comes in the form of laughter, a feeling of entertainment. The appearance that they have in their school picture remains a personal choice. To strip them of the right that all other students have to show their faces in a yearbook is to strip them of their freedom. A school that promotes this action promotes the violation of the basis of a society that gives rights to individuals. A public school, supported by these very people, is meant to promote individuality and original expression. How can it claim to adhere to this message when it denies the existence of some of its more esoteric members? We, the students of East Aurora High School, do not believe that due to a particular appearance a student should not be included in our yearbook. If one person is not allowed then these signatures represent the names of every other person that does not feel comfortable allowing their picture to be used, as a form of discrimination. If Devon and Oliver are not included then we do not condone the inclusion of the following people:
