Keep the YMCA Downtown, Central and Accessible

To: Westport/Weston YMCA
Westport Board of Selectmen
Westport Planning and Zoning Commission
Westport Conservation Commission:

WE, the undersigned Westport residents, believe that moving the YMCA from a downtown location to the remote, residential and rural neighborhood where Camp Mahackeno is located is the wrong decision for the town.

This relocation would increase traffic congestion, jeopardize health and safety, create sprawl, destroy open space, endanger the environment, bring overdevelopment, change the character of a neighborhood and our town, and harm the vitality of Westport’s downtown.

We urge the denial of any application or special permit seeking this move, and we hereby ask you to work to keep the YMCA downtown.

Thank you.

YDowntown is a group of Westport citizens concerned with the character and future of our town. We believe the Westport-Weston YMCA should remain in a downtown location that is central and accessible to all.

Moving the Y to a designated rural residential neighborhood off the Merritt Parkway is contrary to the town plan and current planning theories.

The proposed relocation not only will destroy existing open space and homeowners' property values, it will hurt downtown business and bring more traffic and sprawl to Westport.

The Y's new facility CAN be built downtown, if the people of Westport demand it.

There is also a hard petition circulating so sign either.
