The petition

The Asian Arts Initiative, Highwire Gallery, and the Institute for Arts in Education - all integral parts of Philadelphia's arts and cultural community are challenged with identifying and relocating to a new "home" due to the expansion of the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The Asian Arts Initiative is leading the effort to develop a new, shared arts facility with other arts organizations and artists being displaced from the Gilbert Building. The effort, called the Gilbert Arts Project, will allow us to continue collaborating and serving the city's diverse cultural communities.

Together, the Gilbert Arts Project organizations and artists currently serve thousands of Philadelphia's youth and community members with programs that have an invaluable impact on our city. For example, research shows that young people in arts programs are:
* Twice as likely to win an award for academic achievement; and
* 31 % more likely to say they plan to continue education after high school.

Investments in the arts are proven to be lasting investments in the communities that support them. However, to continue providing the critical services that we offer, the Gilbert Arts Project needs your support and assistance in the coming months. Please assist the Asian Arts Initiative in making the Gilbert Arts Project a reality. Thank you.

Created in response to community concerns about racial tension, the Asian Arts Initiative began programming in May 1993 with Philadelphia’s first-ever Asian American Arts Festival: “Live Traditions/Contemporary Issues” at the Painted Bride Art Center. The Asian Arts Initiative has since expanded to become a community arts center that offers performances, exhibitions, workshops, and training for artists and everyday people who share our mission of community-based arts. We are grounded in the belief that all people have the right to creative expression, and that the arts can provide an important voice for Asian Americans and other groups whose lives and stories are marginalized in our society.

As one of the very few Asian American community arts centers in the country, the Asian Arts Initiative is a unique and vital meeting place where artists and everyday people can think critically and creatively about the experiences of Asian Americans.
