The World Trade Organization (WTO) has many agreements installed that are meant to encourage and improve trade around the world. However many of these agreements benefit only wealthy nations while harming the poorer ones, specifically with regards to public health. The General Agreement on Trade in Services for example, promotes the privatization of services, which could include provisions such as electricity and water. In many countries where it is difficult to provide clean water, foreign investors will buy the water of that particular country. This often leads to an enormous increase in the price of water, sometimes to the point where people of that nation cannot afford it. Without being able to afford such a basic need, there is no way in which the public health of these countries can be improved. The Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) is another aspect of the WTO that has detrimental effects on developing nations. This agreement ensures very specific patent protection especially for pharmaceutical and technological inventions. With HIV/AIDS as one of the biggest epidemics of our time, especially in the developing world, it is necessary to make antiretroviral drugs fiscally accessible to these nations. However the TRIPS agreement makes it very difficult to make generic (less expensive) drugs which would be much more available to people in the global south. Without making these agreements of the WTO case specific to each country it will be impossible to improve the health conditions of the majority of the world. Please support me and let’s do all we possibly can to change these agreements!
