The petition
As members of the Women’s Soccer Club (WSC), we expect to play in an environment free of hate and bigotry. The WSC should be league where all women are accepted and valued regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, or physical appearance.
On January 20, 2008, a player was directly targeted, verbally attacked and further insulted as an opposing player made assumptions about this player’s sexual orientation. The hateful term “dyke” was used more than once during this unprovoked tirade. While the victim was able to remain calm and keep her composure, this insensitive outburst has caused much hurt for the player and the team.
The WSC should not tolerate bigotry and hate. There should be a zero tolerance policy for an act of bigotry that causes hurt and distress to a player and her character. As WSC members, we demand to feel safe and respected no matter what our preferences or beliefs. We will not be victimized. The WSC should be a soccer club where we are valued for our diversity.
We will not tolerate bigotry and prejudice within the WSC and feel that anyone who attacks another player’s character and beliefs should be banned from the league.
