Clearly the city's main attraction is its Historic District and related structures. With the weakening of the textile industry, Danville should protect its tourist industry by salvaging such marvelous landmarks as the Worsham Street Bridge.Flag

Name: Anne Zavala Moushey on Aug 5, 2004State: GACountry: USComments: I grew up in Danville, and the Worsham Street bridge is a fixture of my childhood. Obviously, the City government doesn't place a high premium on preserving its past; this might be understandable if there were indications that it was spending its taxpayers' money on other civic improvements or other programs that would attract jobs and businesses. I'm sad to see Danville's powers-that-be exhibiting the same poor judgment, "good ol'boy" mentality, and back-door machinations that have kept this city mired in a progressive decline over the years. It's hard to believe that Greensboro, NC and Danville were the same size in 1969. Speaks volumes about the effectiveness of Danville's "leadership", doesn't itFlag

Name: Anonymous on Apr 10, 2007State: VACountry: USComments: The Worsham family originally settled in Henrico County in Virginia. While I was born and raised in Texas my family roots are in virginia and this area. I do not become invoved in too many issues such as this becasue if a structure is delapadated then I am not opposed to tearing it down. However I am very suspicious of what is going on with the Worsham Bridge. Especially give the fact the City has neglected the bridge maintenance for over 20 years and the sudden decesion to close the bridge without any public notice. Should an independent contractor evaluate the bridge and recommend it would be less costly to demolish versus repair then I would want to see the report detials and make a decesion from that..Flag

Name: Sonja Ingram on May 10, 2007State: MDCountry: USComments: Worsham Street Bridge is a historic Danville landmark. Many people all over Virgina and other states agree. In 2005, it was on the Association for the Preservation of Virginia's Antiquities' most endangered list. The bridge was the gateway to the tobacco warehouse district and should be preserved as part of Danville's history. If we continue to destroy physical ties to the past, we loose the visible links that remind us of who we are. Having strong roots is what allows one to grow.Flag

Name: Joann Verostko on May 18, 2007State:Country:Comments: I feel the Worsham Street Bridge is an historical asset that Danville would be foolish to demolish. Future residents and our children would shake their heads in dismay that we allowed it to happen. Also, as the Craighead corridor continues to develop and flourish the Worsham Street Bridge will be an important connection to other parts of the city. Again, tearing it down would be short sighted.Flag

Name: Sarah Latham on May 19, 2007State: VACountry: USComments: Save the bridge. It's part of our distinct heritage and culture. It defines our viewscape. Most importantly of all, this bridge is one of only two that connects to old Neapolis, which is in the process of revitalization, as is the Tobacco warehouse district. This bridge -- returned to use for light traffic -- will boost the economic development in these historic areas. DO NOT TEAR WORSHAM STREET BRIDGE DOWN.Flag
