Comments: A horrible tragedy. An apology would be the least the British government could do. The granting of a posthumous knighthood would be the honorable thing to do.

Comments: A great mind of science cut down in his prime by an antiquated system of culture and justice - tragic. By doing the right thing now and acknowledging this man and his contributions to the Realm and the world, the British government could also recognize the importance of human rights now.

Comments: Even if he had not been the genius he was, Turing would have deserved an apology for the treatment meted out to him. That he contributed so much to the British war effort, and to the development of computing, makes that apology even more necessary.

Comments: Turing was one of the greatest mathematicians the world has ever known. Breaking the Enigma code aside, his other contributions to math are remarkable. To treat an astounding man with disregard is a shame. I hope the Government realizes the mistake and apologizes.

Comments: While it is an easy thing to celebrate achievements, it is a far more difficult - and yet worthwhile - thing to acknowledge and (as much as we can) correct things that we have done in the past that were wrong. While the prosecution and punishment of this man were done in a different time, and according to the laws that then prevailed, I would urge the British Government to issue a formal apology to the memory of Alan Turing and to redouble its efforts to praise his legacy. Not only would this demonstrate the ability of the government to grow and learn from its own past actions, but it would be a positive step towards people who either are gay (to whom it will demonstrate the support of the British government) or who are not accepting of those who are gay (who, it would be hoped, might re-evaluate their opinions).
