Alan Turing was the greatest computer scientist ever born in Britain. He laid the foundations of computing, helped break the Nazi Enigma code and told us how to tell whether a machine could think. He was also gay. He was prosecuted for being gay, chemically castrated as a 'cure', and took his own life, aged 41. The British Government should apologize to Alan Turing for his treatment and recognize that his work created much of the world we live in and saved us from Nazi Germany. And an apology would recognize the tragic consequences of prejudice that ended this man's life and career.

Started by Cameron Buckner, as a show of solidarity with Graham-Cumming's effort in the UK, so that those who are not British citizens can also express their opinion.

Prime Minister Brown has responded to Graham-Cumming's petition and Graham-Cumming has declared the end of his campaign. Thanks very much to all who signed, and a special thanks and kudos to Graham-Cumming! I will leave up this page and allow more signatures and comments; I think the comments here are lovely and serve as a small but fitting memorial to Turing, given that this petition would not have been possible without the technology and freedom he helped us obtain. I think this petition, receiving at this point over 11,000 signatures from six continents, shows that Turing is not just a British hero, but also a beloved world hero as well.
