The Living Wage Petition
Where as over 120 communities have past ordinances and are leading this nation to a living wage
Where as the cooperation of The City and County governments of New Hanover are needed so that our communities are not set as economic rivals
Where as all full time workers deserve a living wage
Where as the health, safety and prosperity of our citizens require wages that afford a comfortable lifestyle
Where as our taxpayers do not benefit from other working citizens relying on social services
Where as the most effective way for our citizens to afford housing is to increase their income
Where as our communities’ service economies, especially small businesses, benefit from citizens having disposable income
Where as many working men and women are unable to exercise their rights to fair labor negotiations
We the citizens of Wilmington and New Hanover County petition the City and County governments to cooperate in appointing a Board of Economic Equality (BEE), with citizens from our communities’ differing economic backgrounds, to establish costs of living, to establish the level of need, to address concerns and to advise the City and County governments on adopting ordinances, which ensure the men and women working in our communities are afforded a living wage. |
