The
first Labor
Day:
Speakers placed emphasis upon the economic and civic significance

| WE
BELIEVE: |
That
the decline in American prosperity can and must
be reversed. |
| WE
CHALLENGE: |
Elected
officials, the media, and the nation's employers
to address this most pressing domestic issue--the
decline of opportunity and fair pay for American
workers-- with substance, compassion and commitment. |
| WE
PLEDGE: |
To
hold government and business accountable for policies
that undermine American workers, to vote our conscience,
and to take personal action in the fight for fair
labor practices. |
| WE
DECLARE: |
That
Labor Day, 2004, shall be observed as "The
Working Poor Picnic," and shall mark the turning
point in America's commitment to pride and self-sufficiency
for all working people.
|
|
We,
the undersigned, endorse this proclamation
in the spirit of a
stronger, fairer and more prosperous America:
