Name: Gill Wilkinson on Feb 11, 2012Comments: Woolwich lost it's appeal when the Co-op and Cuffs (yes, the wonderful department store in Powis Street) closed down. Not forgetting the covered market!! People from all over SE London used to visit Woolwich. The workers from the Royal Arsenal are no more, but Woolwich has the great potential to become the new 'Bluewater'. Develope an ice-skating rink, cinema and sports facilities on derelict land (maybe an bowling ally) Woolwich had the first McDonalds. Re-vamp the old Co-op into a department store. Remember father Christmas and buying your school uniform in Cuffs? Let's bring jobs for local people, and I hope a entrepreneur takes note.Flag

Name: KEITH DAVIS-TAYLOR on Mar 13, 2012Comments: It is outrageous that a lovely buiding such as this should be considered for demolition, what on earth are the council thinking of!!!!....Under no circumstances can the council justify this action. I would like to see the whole building restored, but at thevery least keep the shell of this magnificent structure. I have fond memories of visiting the 5th floor to look at the toy department when I was a child. Whatever you replace this with, it will never be as good as this wonderful structure. I am very concerned for it's well being.Flag

Name: Roger Callow on Mar 15, 2012Comments: This building is part of our heritage and needs preserving for future generations to use and enjoy. I saw Eltham High Street wrecked by the modernisation of the 60s & 70's and Powis Street has already suffered in a similar way. Please consider the merits of this building becoming part of any new development rather than just it becoming just an empty building plot and a memory.Flag

Name: BRIAN COOPER on Mar 16, 2012Comments: Since the 1960s the local planning process has repeatedly vandalised Woolwich town centre. Look to the example of the Arsenal site. Innotate and save this site even if it is only the shell that is retained.Flag

Name: Ian S. Reid on Apr 25, 2012Comments: it's sad that in our haste to modernize and 'improve' we frequently need to destroy the past- or do we? I think old Co-op department store in Powis St. Woolwich is a case in point. The Co-op/RACS is of Historical significance to Woolwich and a visual reminder for future generations would be in preserving the Art Deco architecture of this once thriving department store as it will never be duplicated again. Napier a city in New Zealand is World famous for its many beautifully restored Art Deco buildings-Woolwich may also similarly benefit by preserving some of its past commercial architecture.Flag

Leave something of beautiful Woolwich - I moved out of Woolwich 30 years ago and when I return now, I hardly recognise it, some of this for the better but goodness, we had some WONDERFUL buildings - surely, some important heritage can be preserved - great Art Deco facade is lovely.Flag
