| 39 | Arvin Hill | Dearest IFC: It's pretty clear that you destroyed Minor Accomplishments as revenge on Laura Kightlinger & David Punch for their observance of the writer's strike. So much for IFC Cool, you fraudulent hucksters. Try though you might, you cannot disguise MALICE as a sound business decision. Unfortunately for the fake progressives in charge of IFC programming, your soon-to-be dwindling audience is too smart for the usual game of 3-card monte PR. And unlike HBO when it canceled Deadwood and John From Cincinnati, IFC is *severely* lacking in other attractions. After three decades of abysmal disregard for their audiences, non-broadcast networks are finally stepping up to the plate with fresh, smart series television. Meanwhile, IFC has taken ten steps back by terminating the funniest, most daring, outrageous comedy in the history of the medium. NOBODY needs IFC to buy, rent or download a movie, nor to keep up with the latest indie film news. I kept IFC for the last two years solely because it provided something I couldn't get anywhere else: An intelligent, irreverent, innovative comedy series no other network could touch. That IFC management has completely failed to comprehend the multifaceted value of "The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman" is extremely dispiriting and reflects very poorly on the professional judgment of those responsible for its demise. This is the last month I'll be paying for IFC. No doubt my individual value as a customer won't be missed by the vindictive jerks at the network, but tin ears are never a good quality in business, and, IFC, despite its high self-regard, is not exempt from the rule. Having hollowed out its once-promising brand, IFC is now officially coasting, and the people who snuffed out "Minor Accomplishments" can take a good deal of credit for expediting the network's disappointing descent. Regurgitating "Girl Interrupted" and the usual brooding hipster fare is highly unlikely to generate profit indefinitely, especially when your competitors have finally recognized the value of series television. If IFC spent a quarter of the energy on programming as it does making cool commercials for itself, your audience - and shareholders - would likely find themselves considerably more satisfied with their investment. Because I have little faith that IFC will reverse course and recognize its error, I'll be cheering for HBO, Showtime, AMC and Bravo as they slowly but surely devour ever-increasing chunks of IFC's market share. Assuming IFC fails to reconsider its stunning incompetence in this matter, my most fervent wish is that Laura Kightlinger, Nicholle Tom & David Punch all move on *together*. If you chumps don't think they're capable of creating a new project to rival Minor Accomplishments, then IFC has not only jumped the shark, but been eaten by it and transformed into one big fat sinking shark turd. PS-II: You dare defy Teri Garr? Is that *really* a road you want to go down? |
