The Whitby Gothic Weekend is a twice yearly festival for goths which began in 1994. It is organised by Jo Hampshire who runs Top Mum Promotions.
It is held in Whitby, North Yorkshire and encompasses music, trade venues and other fringe events which are spread through several venues across the town including the Spa, the Rifle Club, RAW, Laughtons Nightclub and (until recently) the Leisure Centre.
In October 2005 Top Mum introduced the Leisure Centre as an additional fourth site of its increasingly popular 'Bizarre Bazaar' gothic market. This site ran successfully for three and a half years until April 2009 when another company, 'Whitby Festival Traders' decided to surreptitiously secure this venue's dates for themselves.
Top Mum puts the proceeds from this venue towards the enormous expense of running the main festival event at the Spa, and without this funding it is doubtful whether the event will be able to continue in it's present form. It is believed that it is for this reason that Top Mum have not yet announced the dates of the coming 2010 festivals but have made a recent announcement which says that they will almost certainly not be when we expect them to be.
The 'traditional' dates are usually around the last week of April and that's when Whitby Festival Traders have booked the Leisure Centre for.
This petition is to try to ensure the Whitby Gothic Weekend takes place on the dates we have come to think of as 'traditonal' and to hopefully secure its future, by asking Whitby Festival Traders to restore the booking back into the hands of Top Mum Promotions.
