We the undersigned, petition the company, 'Whitby Festival Traders' to restore the booking of the Leisure Centre during the April 2010 Whitby Gothic Weekend (specifically the 23rd, 24th and 25th April) into the rightful hands of Top Mum Promotions. We appreciate that Whitby Festival Traders are not an active part of the gothic community, and as such they may not fully understand the damage their actions have caused. Without the financial support the Leisure Centre income provides to the Spa event the whole festival has been brought into jeopardy, as Top Mum Promotions may be forced to run the Goth Weekend at another time causing a split in the festival. At the Whitby Festival Traders stalls weekend there will be a substantial drop in the usual number of visitors, the trader's sales will therefore suffer, and there will be no main Spa event for the few visitors that are there to attend. At the official Goth Weekend there will be far fewer traders for people to visit, and as the Leisure Centre market quickly became popular when Top Mum Promotions first unveiled it in October 2005, this will no doubt have a negative effect on the official festival. It is therefore for these reasons that we feel we must ask Whitby Festival Traders to restore the Leisure Centre booking to Top Mum Promotions in order to ensure the future of this much loved event and vital twice yearly boost to Whitby's economy. *** EDIT - Thank you for your support so far, but further to some of the comments left here can we please make it clear that we do not advocate the boycotting of stalls at Whitby Leisure Centre or at any other venue, and we would ask anyone signing here not to do this either. The only effect a boycott will have is that the individual traders in the venues will experience a loss of sales and they are as much the victims in this as Top Mum Promotions are.

Background information: The Whitby Gothic Weekend is a twice yearly festival for goths which began in 1994. It is organised by Jo Hampshire who runs Top Mum Promotions. It is held in Whitby, North Yorkshire and encompasses music, trade venues and other fringe events which are spread through several venues across the town including the Spa, the Rifle Club, RAW, Laughtons Nightclub and (until recently) the Leisure Centre. In October 2005 Top Mum introduced the Leisure Centre as an additional fourth site of its increasingly popular 'Bizarre Bazaar' gothic market. This site ran successfully for three and a half years until April 2009 when another company, 'Whitby Festival Traders' decided to surreptitiously secure this venue's dates for themselves. Top Mum puts the proceeds from this venue towards the enormous expense of running the main festival event at the Spa, and without this funding it is doubtful whether the event will be able to continue in it's present form. It is believed that it is for this reason that Top Mum have not yet announced the dates of the coming 2010 festivals but have made a recent announcement which says that they will almost certainly not be when we expect them to be. The 'traditional' dates are usually around the last week of April and that's when Whitby Festival Traders have booked the Leisure Centre for. This petition is to try to ensure the Whitby Gothic Weekend takes place on the dates we have come to think of as 'traditonal' and to hopefully secure its future, by asking Whitby Festival Traders to restore the booking back into the hands of Top Mum Promotions.
