We the undersigned, residents and property owners in the West Village, oppose the MTA’s plan to establish a new bus route through our neighborhood. The proposed route will start at Spring Street and will run north on Greenwich Street through the west side of Manhattan up to 59th Street and will return south on Washington Street to Spring Street. Our objection is limited to the portion of the route that includes Greenwich and Washington Streets. It will have a negative impact on our environment and our quality of life in addition to being a waste of taxpayer dollars. In recent years our residential neighborhood has been increasingly burdened by vehicular traffic and noise pollution. The new bus route will only exacerbate these problems. We do not welcome the additional noise, congestion, pollution, and risk to pedestrian safety that it will bring. Below please find detailed reasons as to why we object to this plan: 1) Our neighborhood houses two major trucking facilities bordering Greenwich and Washington Streets; UPS and FedEx. Their trucks continuously travel north and south on these two streets six days a week from early morning until late at night. 2) Garbage trucks will soon be traveling to and from the new Department of Sanitation transfer station on the west side causing additional traffic and noise. 3) Greenwich and Washington Streets are now one-lane roads due to the advent of bike lanes. Traffic backs up on Washington Street at rush hour with tunnel commuters. Spillover traffic from the Meat Market regularly congests Washington and Greenwich Streets on weekends and evenings. When trucks turn onto these streets pedestrians have difficulty crossing, and cars honk their horns. Additionally, we foresee that the NYPD and Fire Department will have compromised access to emergencies due to traffic jams. 4) The sidewalks on both Greenwich and Washington Streets are too narrow to accommodate bus shelters. 5) Street parking will likely be eliminated in order to accommodate bus lanes and bus stops. 6) One block east the Hudson Street northbound bus (M11) runs more frequently than the proposed new route, which is planned to run at 30-minute intervals. At Bethune Street and Greenwich Street buses already run north up 10th Avenue. Bus service to the far west side above 14th Street can be met utilizing or augmenting existing routes, providing transfers or starting new service at 14th Street. In addition, the neighborhood has ample access to many major subway lines (A, C, E, L, 1, 9, 2, 3, F,) and path trains. Thank you for considering our concerns and requests. Sincerely,
