To: Members of the Seattle School Board The Seattle School District released new proposed attendance area boundaries for West Seattle middle schools and high schools on November 3. The new boundaries differ dramatically from previous versions. The Seattle School Board is allowing less than 15 days for the public to understand and comment on the new proposed boundaries. Yet, these boundaries will profoundly shape our communities and our schools for decades. The boundaries will be very difficult to amend in the future. We the undersigned petition the Seattle School Board to: - Delay the final vote for West Seattle boundaries, now scheduled for November 18, in order to provide adequate time for the West Seattle community to review the new assignment plan and understand its implications for our schools; and - The Board and School District administration should schedule a community meeting in West Seattle in order to provide information about the new plan and accept comments from the public. Members of the public are encouraged to also email members of the Seattle School Board: steve.sundquist@seattleschools.org, sherry.carr@seattleschools.org, harium.martin-morris@seattleschools.org, peter.maier@seattleschools.org, cheryl.chow@seattleschools.org, mary.bass@seattleschools.org, michael.debell@seattleschools.org, And the Seattle Public School District administration: trlibros@seattleschools.org, superintendent@seattleschools.org. A copy of the citywide high school attendance area map can be found here: http://www.seattleschools.org/area/boundarymapr/pdfs/HS_skeleton_11x17_1103.pdf. In West Seattle, the middle school and high school attendance areas are proposed to be the same.
