Comments: *If at all possible, I am also asking for the decriminalization, if not outright legalization, of marijuana as well. LEAP is an organization of former and current Law Enforcement officials who have been calling for an end to the prohibition of marijuana as well. Many people say that drug use has torn apart families...well, in my case, the only reason my family was torn apart was because of my arrest for possessing marijuana. I was arrested in front of my sister, grandfather, and 3 year old niece, all of whom cried as they watched me being stuffed into a police cruiser with my hands cuffed behind my back. I have never harmed anyone, and that was my first and only arrest. A neighbor of mine called the police because he knew of my plants and thought that I would STEAL HIS CUSTOMERS because he himself SOLD marijuana. Police came to my home, saw the plants, and lead me away in handcuffs that day. My mom, who is struggling financially, wound up having to pay my bail. And because of the charge, I am unable to continue on with schooling until I can have the drug charge expunged from my record because having a drug conviction makes one ineligible for financial aid. Had it been a conviction for rape, theft, assault, etc. I would still be able to obtain financial aid; but 1 arrest for a drug charge, and that ability is revoked. What good is it doing society to arrest and criminalize people like me? I am a good woman; a loving aunt, a thoughtful and kind daughter and granddaughter, a helpful sister, etc. I am a good citizen and have never been in trouble for anything else in my life, EVER. Is what happened to me really justice? Had I been inside my home drinking alcohol, that would have been totally legal; but had I drank too much and been around some nefarious characters, I could be raped (and I have been when I was intoxicated once before)...but that has never happened because of marijuana. And yet, if I want to relax with a marijuana cigarette in the privacy of my own home, I am not allowed to? I MUST seek out that relief from alcohol? Alcohol has also contributed to many, MANY accidents and dearths throughout the years. When Prohibition was in effect, it became clear to the nation that it did not stop or even stem the "alcohol" problem, so why do we still think this archaic approach to marijuana is doing any more good than harm? It is not...and I can assure you of that fact. Sir...I am begging you with everything I have in me; please do whatever you can to make marijuana in our state legal. I suffer from a few debilitating mental illnesses and marijuana, above all else, truly helps me cope and function better as a human being. Psychotropic drugs are not well understood and are not even guaranteed to work...and they have not worked for me. But when I smoke marijuana, I can relax, calm down, stimulate my appetite, and I find it much much easier to be social and interact with the rest of society. It is late...I did not sleep last night because I was up all night, anxious about the court appearance I had to attend this morning for my marijuana charge. I am now on probation for 6 months and am unable to continue in my schooling. It has also impeded my ability to seek gainful employment. I have spent many nights crying about this and I wish there was a way to make people understand just how much the legalization of marijuana means to the many other people like me who exist in this world. I may not be entirely coherent, but I am emotional, tired, and overwhelmed...and I am just sincerely asking that you take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that folks like myself will not be unfairly prosecuted for using a simple, God-grown PLANT for medical and recreational purposes. Many other drugs have been derived from plants...and they usually require synthesization. Marijuana does not need it at all; it comes up from the ground in the perfect condition. And yet...marijuana has been demonized as if it were some type of syringe that grows up out of the ground, filled with a deadly mix of crack and heroin. Perhaps we must wait for the older generation to die out so that their unfair, bigoted, and ill informed opinions and positions regarding marijuana can die out with them. But as an elected official, I believe that you know that there is a growing acceptance of marijuana use in this country and for once, Pennsylvania could be on the LEADING EDGE of societal change instead of laboring behind at the end of the line, only dragging our legislation into the new age after everyone else has already done so.

Comments: i am not just an average pothead, though i enjoy my smoke. time and again i have used a small amount to level out anxiety issues, as well as serious back and neck issues. it increases my focus, i get more done. how it can be illegal when kids are buying cigarettes and drunks are driving all over is beyond me. GO GREEN!
