The Petition:

The Council of the Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) plans to explore the possibility of regulating the Internet soon. "The Council established a division of research and strategic development, which has commissioned several studies on the Internet," said La Presse Michel Arpin, vice president, broadcasting, at the CRTC. "Investigations have been made everywhere in the world, our staff tells us that the Council will publish in March 2008 the results of this research. The CRTC then will hold hearings on the issue of the Internet, that is towards the end of 2008. "

The interventionist attitude of some agencies towards a free zone internationally recognized such as the Internet contributes to concern us as canadians. Here is an alarming speech heard at the last ADISQ Gala:

"If, for example, I subscribe to Bell Sympatico and Bell Mobility, I would like to ensure that Canadian content will be available on a priority basis. If Google is able to do it in China with the intention of censorship, we can do it here with the intentions of cultural advancement. " - Solance Drouin, ADISQ

This petition seeks to unite the voices of canadians, in order to formulate a clear message to the CRTC:

We, businesses, agencies, medias, artists and citizens, believe that the Internet is the largest and freest network of information and entertainment of any kind in the world. We are convinced that it would be presumptuous for the CRTC to impose censorship and regulations that may disrupt canadians, voluntarily or involuntarily, in their freedom of choice and expression.

People who were here before us have made it possible to live in a free country. We must do everything in our power to protect and even encourage this freedom, a freedom that must also be lived via new technologies.

We therefore invite you to sign the petition and leave a comment to the CRTC. The federal agency will be kept informed of developments in the petition and comments addressed to them.
