Name: Nickie Felts on Feb 1, 2013Comments: This is our first year in competitive hockey and we have been very happy with the experience thus far which is why reading about the way this decision was renderred came as such a surprise. We are very dissapointed in the decision to split Metcalf and Russell and even more disspointed that the kids seems to have been forgotten here as this decision affects them the most. My son has developed some great friendships, which has allowed us to also build relationships with other communities, and now he is the one who is affected by this decision. The thought of not seeing his friends again next year, or being on the rival team, does not sit well with him or us. This decision has brought sadness and embarasement to those directly affected and is an insult to everyone who has already given so much to the Metcal-Russell RiverRats over the years. Please conconsider and take the higher road to resolve this matter, the only emotions that should be considered are the ones felt by the kids.Flag

Name: Brian Nugent on Feb 3, 2013Comments: I was deeply saddened when I heard about the seemingly unjustified decision by some members of the MDHA executive that led to this outcome. As a past member of the MDHA Executive and the VP of Competitive for the River Rats, I can speak first hand of all the efforts and countless hours the River Rats executive put into the development of this proud Rep B program. Working together with my Russell counterparts and friends was truly a team effort and the progress we made to the program was continuously improving. The many years spent on the executive was to continue the programs in both MDHA and RMHA house league as well as the involvement of both associations in the joint Rep B hockey program. For a decision as serious as this one to be made without proper consultation and input from both associations, parents and the players is a shame. Many late nights were spent at our meetings trying to agree on decisions for both RMHA & MDHA. Even if there were differences of opinions, (and many times there were), we worked together to come to a unified joint decision and we all supported it in the end. After all, we were there for our children, trying to improve their experience of hockey- a sport they love to play and one that we loved to watch them play. I don't see any evidence of this taking place with the current decision to break away from Russell for the Rep B program. Not to mention the efforts taken by the Rats Executive to solidify the River Rats name. This was a joint effort and the "River Rats" name belongs to both Metcalfe & Russell. And so I am strongly against such a decision and hope that a collective discussion can be had on the topic and only when all the points have been discussed, reasons for and reasons against that a joint decision be made.Flag

Name: Dawn Murray on Feb 3, 2013Comments: I am always fascinated by how sneaky people can be when they feel slighted. I can only assume that those within the MDHA responsible for this decision feel slighted in some way as the decision taken seems to not be about the kids and their development but about personal feelings. Far too often, hockey becomes about ensuring that the adults get their way as opposed to what is truly good for the kids. My son no longer plays competitive hockey so this decision doesn't affect him or me but it DOES affect those kids currently playing and those coming into the system. The sneaky way this was done is really the most disturbing part of all of this. When people make decisions based on personal agendas, it usually backfires. Sadly, in this case it may only end up affecting the kids. This experience has left a sour taste in everyone's mouth and I only hope that if a split can be avoided, that fences can truly be mended. In order for that to happen, I believe the current executive of the MDHA needs to step aside.Flag

Name: Mitch Geerts on Feb 4, 2013Comments: The River Rats ( both Metcalfe and Russell ) have been a staple in Reb B hockey for many years. I am very disappointed in how this procedure and this decision has come together. The children and parents involved in this association over the last 10 years are no doubt one of the best in the Ottawa area when it comes for RepB hockey. I hope both associations can come together and iron out their differences and keep this very reputable RepB association together for the childrens sake.Flag

To Marc Seaman for articulating a way for a solution and to the mdha board members who recognized that the issue needs to be revisited. Democracy won.Flag

Name: Jack Meoff on Feb 22, 2013Comments: It is my understanding that the GHA is looking to bring all District 9 Rep B under administration of the Rangers, the competitive body of the GHA. Why was this option not provided by MDHA or RMHA. If MDHA truly wants balanced player development, coach mentorship, discipline etc..across the board for River Rats, would this not be the best option. Especially given the fact that the Rangers are so successful and use the same company for development and mentorship, Endeavour Sports Group. Just a thought.Flag
